It looks as though Aberdeen Scotland has another Surprise Millionaire to boast about. If you recall, last year we profiled Aberdeen resident Mrs. Jane Hutton and her amazing wealth-building ability. This year, we can add Aberdeen’s own Agnes “Nessie” Bruce to the list. The frugal and mild-mannered Mrs. Bruce who passed away in 2018, left a secret 1.3 million pound estate to be split between many worthwhile charities around Scotland. According to relatives, Mrs. Bruce was a really nice woman who was fond of knitting, needlework, and travel. I’m sure her relatives are proud to know that the fortune left by this very sweet person will benefit many in the immediate community as well as Scotland as a whole.
This week’s Surprise Millionaire is a quiet, retired teacher in Glasgow Scotland. When Grahame Pincock age 90 passed away in 2017, his friends and neighbors were shocked to learn that the unassuming bachelor had secretly amassed a seven million pound estate through thriftiness and investing. Mr. Pincock chose to bless his community by leaving hundreds of thousands to cancer charities as well as setting up a separate trust to help those in need.
We have had one or two other Surprise Millionaires from Scotland in recent memory. I think all of those stories about the “thrifty scots” just might be true!
If you were to ask her friends and neighbors, 93-year-old Queenie Cunningham was a very nice lady who was considered an asset to her small Scottish highland town. The retired secretary who suffered from the after effects of polio and had spent time in an iron lung as a young woman, never let her disability slow her down. She grew her own vegetables, was an ardent animal lover and never missed an episode of her favorite soap operas. All in all she was quite the character.
These days Queenie is more known for the amazing gifts she left her favorite charities after her 2017 passing. Most of her secret 2.2 million pound estate is currently shared by such organizations as the Salvation Army, the British Red Cross and Highland Hospice.
While the fact that Queenie was so generous upon her passing surprised no one, the fact that she was a multi-millionaire certainly did! This humble, quiet and most generous woman should be an inspiration to us all.
Mrs. Jane Hutton from Aberdeen Scotland was known as a very frugal sort. This animal lover and one-time secretary was never showy or sought to be in the spotlight. In fact, she always took the background parts in the theatre group she belonged to. No, Jane was content to spend her time with friends and enjoying low-cost and fun activities in her Northen Scottish city. Thus she had all of the makings of a Surprise Millionaire!
