A Surprise Millionaire Controversy in New Hampshire! Two wills, two attorneys and a host of beneficiaries are all vying for an elderly lady’s $1 million estate. My advice to our Surprise Millionaires is to make your wishes known early, make it legal and binding and don’t change your mind if you can avoid it!
I’m sure this poor lady’s estate will be decimated by the time this is all settled. Link
I almost think you should just start giving some of your stuff away while you’re still alive. For example, when you are about 70, get your kids together, give them the stuff they want and sell the rest, then move to a small condo somewhere with sparse furniture. That way you can make sure the people you want get that special item and also it means that when you die your kids won’t need to sell all of your things. You can also gift money each year while you’re alive.
With the inheritance tax like it is, that’s not a bad idea.
Outcome of case: Judge ruled in August 2015 that the new will was invalid. Not sure how much attornies’ fees were. Police officer involved was fired per article in Seacoast Online (Portsmouth)
Thanks for the update! There were a lot of sketchy elements to the case and it looks like the right decision was made.
There is no right decision. If the woman’s will was not upheld in the way she wanted it, then the right decision was not made. It was her money. I don’t care if she took it out into the front yard and made a fire with it.
I agree as long as she had all of her mental capacities which she did appear to have. Thanks for your comment!
I suppose you have a point.
